Composite Deck Under a Patio Cover in Eugene, Oregon

The patio cover was already there and the homeowners liked it. The surface underneath was the problem — so this was a job about working inside something that already existed rather than starting from a blank yard.

During the build

Building under a cover is more exacting than building in the open. The posts come down through the deck and every board has to be cut around them cleanly, because at that height people see the joints from a foot away. Headroom is fixed, so the frame height has to be right the first time.

Finished

The surface is capped composite in two tones — a light field with a darker border that follows the edge and turns the corner past the posts. Under a cover, where the boards stay dry and the colour never bleaches, that detail keeps looking sharp for years.

Can you deck under an existing patio cover?

Yes, and it is one of the best-value outdoor living projects there is. The expensive part — the roof — is already paid for. You are upgrading the floor of a room you already own.
